Paul the Octopus who captivated soccer fans by predicting the results at the World Cup, died yesterday, 26 October 2010.

According to spokeswoman Ariane Vieregge, Paul died of natural causes in his tank on Tuesday morning at the Sea Life aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen.  He had reached the octopus old age of 2 1/2 years.

Paul became internationally famous for correctly predicting the winner of Germany's seven matches at the 2010 World Cup, as well as the final. He made his predictions by opening the lid of one of two clear plastic boxes, each containing a mussel and bearing a team flag.

“We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed,” Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll said in a statement.

Paul retired from the predictions business after the final between Spain and the Netherlands—and returned to his primary role of intriguing and putting smiles in children’s faces at the Sea Life Centre.

After his World Cup soothsaying skills were revealed, the English-born Paul was appointed as an ambassador to England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup. He had English roots, having been hatched at Weymouth Sea Life Center on England’s south coast in 2008.

The cephalopod's contribution to the 2010 World Cup made the Spaniards understandably grateful, even offering to house Paul in their country and afford him a life of extravagance.

He may not have kicked a ball, or even watched a match in South Africa, but few will have a World-Cup legacy which lasts longer than that of Paul, the "Psychic Octopus".

Toy Story 3 = 10 stars!!! (or can I say 15… or more?!)

Toy Story series, the best trilogy ever!!!

After 11 years of patiently waiting, finally, Woody and the rest of the gang, (old and new) made a huge winning comeback!!!

It’s entertaining, stimulating, and original.

Andy’s character reminded me of myself a lot.. all the good childhood memories.. :)

This charming computer-animated film got me teary-eyed at the end... :’)

It’s all worth it, your time and money won’t be wasted.. ;)

Autopsy: Boyzone singer died of natural causes

Associated Press
By CIARAN GILES,Associated Press Writer - Wednesday, October 14

MADRID – Boyzone star Stephen Gately, whose body was found in a house on the Spanish resort island of Mallorca, died of natural causes, according to autopsy results released Tuesday.

A post-mortem showed Gately, 33, an Irishman, died as a result of a pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, the Balearic Islands Superior Justice Tribunal said in a statement.

"The signer of the British group Boyzone died from natural causes, owing to an 'acute pulmonary edema'," the court statement said.

The singer had gone to Mallorca with his partner Andrew Cowles. The two were wed in a civil union in 2006.

The house, situated on an exclusive tree-lined seafront street, overlooks a rocky bay reputed to have some of the best sunset views on Spain's favorite holiday island.

The four other members of the band flew to Mallorca following news of the death.

Boyzone was one of the biggest acts to come out of Ireland in the 1990s. The group was a major hitmaker in Britain and Ireland in the 1990s and announced a comeback tour at the end of last year.

Gately also released several solo singles and appeared in stage musicals. He made headlines when he announced he was gay a decade ago.

News of his death shocked the British and Irish pop world.

Elton John said Sunday that he and his partner, David Furnish, were "stunned by this tragedy."

Facebook: measuring the mood in the US

AFP - Wednesday, October 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - – Facebook is tracking how happy people are in the United States. Mother's Day was predictably upbeat, according to a Gross National Happiness index graph on the popular social networking service's blog on Tuesday, but for reasons unknown people's moods evidently sank days later.

The pattern was the same for Father's Day.

Facebook began earlier this year gauging the nation's mood by tallying the numbers of positive and negative words used in status updates posted by users, intern Adam Kramer of the firm's data team said in an online post.

In brief messages posted to social networking pages, Facebook users keep friends up to speed with thoughts and activities.

"Every day, through Facebook status updates, people share how they feel with those who matter most in their lives," Kramer said.

"These updates are tiny windows into how people are doing. Grouped together, these updates are indicative of how we are collectively feeling."

Facebook worked with psychologists and some of the more than 300 million members of its service to create collections of sunny and gloomy words indicative of whether people were having bright or dark days.

The list of positive words includes "happy," "yay" and "awesome," while negative words include "sad," "doubt" and "tragic."

Holidays were consistently peak happiness days, and the GNH index shot up to double the average happiness reading the November day that the nation celebrated the election of President Barack Obama.

The saddest day in the GNH index was January 22, 2008, after the Asian stock market crashed and actor Heath Ledger died of an apparent accidental drug overdose at the age of 28.

The death of King of Pop Michael Jackson on June 25 of this year marked the second sadest day in the two years measured by the index, according to Kramer.

GNH results are currently based on updates in English but more languages may be added so indexes can be made for other nations, according to Kramer.

The Appendix:
Slimy But Not Worthless

By Christopher Wanjek

An inflammation of the appendix, which most commonly strikes healthy young people between ages 10 and 30 without warning.

The appendix is removed because, as we all know, the appendix serves no purpose ...  right?

Wrong.  Although most biology textbooks say the appendix is useless, we shouldn't sell the organ short.

Biologists in the early 20th century surmised that the human body had over 100 useless parts left over from our more ape-like lifestyle a few million years ago.  The parathyroid was one such organ, now known to regulate calcium-phosphorous metabolism.  The appendix was another.

After birth, the appendix mainly helps the body stave off disease by serving as a lymphoid organ.  Lymphoid organs, with their lymphoid tissue, make white blood cells and antibodies.

The appendix also produces certain chemicals that help direct the white blood cells to the parts of the body where they are needed the most.

The dirty gut is a good training ground for young white blood cells.  The appendix, with its sac routinely collecting and expelling foodstuffs, exposes the white blood cells to myriad bacteria, viruses and drugs passing through the gastrointestinal tract.  This way, the white blood cells learn to fight potentially deadly bacteria, such as E.coli.

The appendix can cause trouble when food gets stuck in there.  The food rots, causing an infection that can be fatal, particularly if the appendix bursts.  Once infected, the appendix needs to be removed.  Life goes on; you'll likely never miss it.

But no more.

Doctors now realize they can use the appendix for reconstructive surgery.  In one type of bladder "replacement" surgery, doctors take part of the intestine to form a bladder and use the appendix tissue to recreate a sphincter muscle, which can contract and open the bladder when urinating. Similarly, the appendix is used as a substitute ureter, a tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

lily allen's music makes you LoLz and be frank at everything, still the music is cute, and the video is a fancy daydream!!

cute voice + explicit lyrics = wtf??!!! ;)

fuck you lily allen

___________

A music video for the song was posted on the official Parlophone YouTube page on June 15 2009. EMI hired the French production company Frenzy Paris who in turn hired the art collective AB/CD/CD. The collective used post production software like Adobe After Effects to distort images. The video is shot from Allen's point of view (we see a polaroid she takes of herself). She is seen to be making the journey from her hotel room to a television studio. Throughout the video, Allen alters the state of things using her hands; for example, by moving her hands apart she'll stretch the Eiffel Tower or enlarge a man's afro hairstyle.

another amazing video from coldplay... it's chalk-animation.. it was shot, all on the floor.. The new video for Strawberry Swing was directed by visual artists Shynola

Interview with Shynola (Strawberry Swing video directors)

July 23, 2009 6:04 pm
The makers of the new video explain how they worked their magic

So, how did you go about planning this video?

We sat around throwing ideas back and forth, silly details or camera moves, and then started to sketch these as stills. We then cut these stills into a timeline, alongside the song, to get a sense of pacing and how it would all marry with the music. It was deliberately spontaneous at that stage to try and keep the video playful. That's a hard thing to hold on to when you are being meticulous.

What's the inspiration behind the story in the video?

First and foremost we really wanted it to be nonsensical and almost dream-like. We also knew that the technique itself would also be a lot for the eye to take in. So when we had the idea of a day with a superhero on some weird adventure we chose to frame the journey with a very simple, easy-to-understand narrative: superhero saves girl from baddy. So it's pretty weird, but makes some sort of sense. I saw the video referred to as "ten-steps-left-of-centre" which we take as a great compliment. I might even get that as a tattoo.

Did you have to do a lot of takes?

There really wasn't time to to redo shots, so everything you see is the first attempt. We did have a false start when we checked the first shot and found that you could clearly see the grid we were using and had to start again.

Photobucket

Was the "chalk-drawing" actually done on the floor?

No one seems to want to believe that we drew it on the floor. Which is particularly galling, seeing how long the video took us.

So how did you do it?

Again we had pretty much all of the animation roughly blocked-out beforehand using computers. It was just a matter of taking one frame at a time with our grid for reference. Luckily, you only need to draw or rub out the bits that have moved since the last frame. We also had this cool portable monitor while filming, which showed you a live feed from the camera, blended with the previous take and our pre-vis.

Was that the most time consuming part of the process?

It was all pretty gruelling. The thing that sticks in my mind was when Chris is falling with the umbrella. If you look closely he is lying on a tiny square skateboard we had made. For each frame we had to drag him an inch this way or that to make him swing. There was a lot of sore backs after the shoot. Always bend at the knee. And back up your hard-drive.

Did you have many technical problems while you were making it?

We did have the occasional problem with the cape getting snarled up - oh, the perils of superhero life! - but we had a brilliant art department team who very capably waggled his cape for the whole shoot.

How long were you working on it in all?

Far too long. My therapist says I should draw a line under it.

And finally, tell us a bit about the dog at the end. What role did he/she have in the production?

The dog's name is Phil. He's often credited in Coldplay's sleevenotes as the fifth member.

PGMA's Rankings in the Previous Years of Forbes' Powerful Women

yes, you heard it.. PGMA is number 44 for this year's forbes' most powerful women in the world.. then i was thinking, how about in the previous years? my curiosity strikes me again.. and here's what i found..

            year         rank
                2004                09
                2005                04
                2006                45
                2007                51
                2008                41
                2009                44

it was a huge drop for her in 2006, from #4 to #45.. (ouch!) in spite of the allegations that she cheated in May 2004 elections, still, she made it in the list..

GMA is No. 44 in list of powerful womenBy GENALYN KABILING August 20, 2009

President Arroyo has placed 44th in the list of the 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes Magazine.

The President, in the last year of her term, dropped from 41st in the magazine’s 2008 ranking of the women who continue to scale heights of control and influence.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel topped the list for the second year in a row, followed by Sheila Blair, chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Forbes noted that the women on its most powerful list are "moving across companies and industries, making big leaps with each change, and repositioning themselves for opportunities that allow them to gain a breadth of experience.”

The business magazine said President Arroyo’s position as Southeast Asia's first leader to meet US President Barack Obama II was “a boon to an otherwise lame-duck presidency." “Arroyo's tumultuous six-year term ends with new elections in May 2010," it said

The President’s profile in the magazine also noted a "potential power grab in the works," referring to plans of congressional allies to rewrite the Constitution and shift to a parliamentary form of government.

Malacanang meantime is pleased with the President’s 44th position at the Forbes list of the world’s powerful women despite the decline in rankin.

“It’s not a decline. The mere fact that she’s there is a big deal,” Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr. told reporters in the Palace.

“To be in the same company of these kinds of leaders is a big deal, is something to be proud of,” he added.

Andaya said the President has grown to become a powerful leader due to her work ethics as well as her sound economic policies.

this is one of my most fave singles from the king of pop...

thanks for the great music... rest in peace, your majesty...

a few info about the single:

Jackson and his sister Janet angrily retaliate against the media for misrepresentation to the public. The acclaimed video was shot primarily in black and white, at a cost of $7 million. (whoa!!! that's huge!!!)

In 1995, Scream gained 11 MTV Video Music Award Nominations—more than any other music video—and won "Best Dance Video", "Best Choreography", and "Best Art Direction". Reacting to this, Jackson stated that he was "very honored", explaining that he had worked "very hard" and he was "very happy" with the reception up to that point. It was also given a Billboard Music Award for best Pop/Rock video. A year later, it won a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form; shortly afterward Guinness World Records listed it as the most expensive music video ever made at a cost of $7 million. In 2001, VH1 placed "Scream" at number nine on their list of the 100 greatest music videos.

Scream Lyrics:

[Michael]
Tired of injustice
Tired of the schemes
The lies are disgusting
So what does it mean
Kicking me down
I got to get up
As jacked as it sounds
The whole system sucks

[Janet]
Peek in the shadow
Come into the light
You tell me I'm wrong
Then you better prove you're right
You're sellin' out souls but
I care about mine
I've got to get stronger
And I won't give up the fight
[Michael]
With such confusions
don't it make you wanna
scream
Your bash abusin' victimize
within the scheme
(Janet)
You try to cope with every
lie they scrutinize
[Both]
Somebody please have mercy
'Cause I just can't take it
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make you just wanna scream

[Michael]
Tired of you tellin'
the story your way
It's causin' confusion
You think it's okay

[Janet]
You Keep changin' the rules
While I keep playin' the game
I can't take it much longer
I think I might go insane

[Michael]
With such confusion

don't it make you wanna
scream
Your bash abusin' victimize
within the scheme
(Janet)
You find your pleasure
scandalizin' every lie
[Both]
Oh father, please have
mercy 'cause I just
can't take it
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop *?!@#!in' with me
Make me wanna scream

[Janet]
"Oh my God, can't
believe what I saw
As I turned on the TV this evening
I was disgusted by
all the injustice
All the injustice"
[Michael]
"All the injustice"

[News Man]
"A man has been brutally
beaten to death by
Police after being
wrongly identified as a
robbery suspect. The man was
an 18 year old black male..."

[Michael]
With such collusions
don't it make you wanna
scream
Your bash abusin' victimize
within the scheme
[Janet]
You try to cope with every
lie they scrutinize
[Both]
Oh brother please have
mercy 'Cause I just
can't take it
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
